A trap prevents drain odours entering the room by holding a small column of water. If it dries out — an unused bathroom, for example — odours come through, and the fix is simply running water. A stainless floor drain with a removable odour trap is easier to clean than a sealed one. Grates should come out easily, since routine cleaning prevents most blockages.
