A water tank must be potable-grade and opaque to block light — light is what allows algae to grow inside. Three-layer polyethylene with an anti-bacterial inner layer is the common choice, and a sealed lid keeps out dust and insects. A brass float valve outlasts plastic and is the part that shuts off the water when the tank fills. Cleaning every six months is necessary no matter how good the tank is.
